Once a compatible vehicle and trailer have been selected and the towing package has been correctly installed and setup, towing like any skill, takes time and practice to master. The first thing you will notice is the weight of the trailer and this is when the importance of the choice of your vehicle will become obvious. If you have chosen the correct vehicle, the extra effort needed to bring your vehicle and trailer up to a comfortable and safe speed should be effortless. Once at this cruising speed, you hardly notice the weight of the trailer behind you.
The next thing to remember is to allow yourself more time and distance for stopping. You have a lot of weight behind you and this will mean it will take longer for you to come to a complete stop. Look ahead for any impending obstacles and dangers which may require you to bring your vehicle and trailer to a halt or at the very least a change in direction. Any sharp pulls on the steering wheel in any direction will be felt two fold in your trailer. Always be alert and allow ample time to react smoothly and safely.
Cornering and changing lanes will now require more room, particularly right hand turns. Remember to swing wide. Depending on the length of your trailer, the wheels will track closer to the right hand corner as you maneuvre around. You can view this to the extreme if you ever watch a semi-trailer rounding a corner. Watch where his front wheels go in relation to the rear. This of course is to an extreme, but you will get the point.
Practice, practice, practice. But never lose site of the fact that you are now in a huge unit and a lot of things are going to be different than the much smaller family sedan. Before long you will be towing like an expert.
